Students and volunteers redesign the facade of houses and apartments – choosing designs that honor the past, depict the present, or predict the future of architecture.

It’s here! The new year marks FLY’s new Creativity Lab. Young artists at Erickson and Ypsi International have embarked on an exciting expedition: exploring Ypsi’s eccentric history in an eclectic gathering of artistic activities!

This week we kicked off our adventures with a podcast. Students explored the halls of their school – recording the shuffling feet, closing lockers, and laughter that embody their academic experiences. Their soundscape served as a backdrop from which they could imagine the first children to attend their school, the sounds they must have heard, and the experiences they must have had. Students then told their own stories; stories that intertwine, deviate, and grow off of the narrative of Ypsilanti.

We don’t want to give too much away, but in the weeks to come our young artists will become authors, architects, and city planners as we reflect on Ypsi’s past and imagine its future. Do you want to join in the fun? Check out our volunteer page to see how you can help!
